An eight-day, 950 km ride from Bali into East Java and back, built around two volcanoes: Bromo and Kawah Ijen. It starts on the coast at Canggu and heads north through Tabanan's farmland and up the hillside roads below Mount Batukaru, then on to the far northwest tip of Bali. Day three crosses the Bali Strait by ferry from Gilimanuk, after which the route runs through East Java's rice fields, villages and forested hills to Ambulu, then climbs into the Bromo-Tengger highlands. One full day is given over to riding down into the Tengger caldera and across the ash plains of the Sea of Sands, with an optional climb to the crater rim. The final day starts at 3 a.m. for the climb to Kawah Ijen, whose crater holds one of the world's largest highly acidic lakes, timed to reach the rim at sunrise. Expect five to six hours of riding a day, a top elevation of 2,400 m, two ferry crossings and a mix of tarmac, rough stone tracks and volcanic sand. Rated Intermediate +, minimum four riders.

Canggu to West Bali. Starting from Pantai Kedungu on the west coast and heading north through Tabanan's farmland and quiet rural country, then inland and up the hillside roads towards the slopes of Mount Batukaru. The route continues to the northern villages of Munduk for a short trek to a waterfall and a Balinese lunch, then out to a secluded coastal spot on the far northwest tip of the island. Stay: boutique oceanfront resort in northwest Bali.
Crossing over. The northwest coastal highway runs through the dry monsoon forest and mangroves of West Bali National Park to Gilimanuk harbour and the morning ferry across the Bali Strait. On the Java side the ride passes rice fields, small villages and winding forested hills, with a roadside warung lunch before the final stretch. Stay: standard hotel in Ambulu.
Ambulu to Cemorolawang. Riding east through rural villages and quiet coastal roads towards the foothills of the Bromo-Tengger highlands. The road climbs through bamboo forest and coffee plantations, then opens into grassland and mountain pine along the Bromo ridgeline. Stay: luxury mountain cabins in Cemorolawang.

Cemoro Lawang to Jember. A demanding route across the top of the East Java highlands, climbing rugged stone tracks through misty valleys and steep terraced farmland. Jember to Licin. A shorter day by design, riding through traditional villages set among terraced farmland and irrigation channels, where the roadside crops shift to coffee, cloves and bananas.
