A short guided ride out of Quito into the Ecuadorian Andes, run on the ground by Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental, the Quito outfit that has been guiding and renting in the country since the mid-2000s. Ecuador packs an unreasonable amount of terrain into a small area: from the capital at 2,850 metres you can drop through cloud forest, cross the equator, ride the corridor of volcanoes and reach the hot springs at Baños in a day or two. Baños sits below the active Tungurahua cone and is the usual base for a rest day, with rafting and canyoning on the doorstep. Guiding is led from a motorcycle with a support vehicle carrying luggage behind. The route recorded here is not currently published by the operator, so confirm the itinerary, the bike list and the dates before booking anything around it.

Fourteen days and eleven riding days on the most complete road loop Wheels of Morocco run: Marrakesh out to the Middle Atlas, down to the Sahara, west through the Anti-Atlas to the Atlantic and back. The route is entirely sealed and the operator pitches it at experienced riders happy with long days and constant corners, with stages between roughly 120 and 290 km. Highlights come in order rather than in a rush: the Ouzoud falls and the lake at Bin El Ouidane, a day trip into imperial Fes and its tanneries, cedar forests and the Foreign Legion tunnel, a desert camp at Merzouga, the Todra cliffs, a rest day at Boumalne Dades, saffron country at Tallouine, then Agadir, Essaouira and the plains back to Marrakesh. Vietnam Motorbike Tour Expert rides its Ha Giang Loop out of Hanoi rather than bussing riders north and starting there, which turns the trip into five days and roughly 950 kilometres of actual riding. The route leaves the company shop on the western edge of the city, follows small roads up the Red River, spends a night in a Dzao village beside Thac Ba Lake, then climbs onto the Dong Van karst plateau for the passes the loop is famous for. Ma Pi Leng and the Heaven Gate pass both fall on the third day. From Meo Vac the group works west to Ba Be Lake, loading the bikes onto a boat for part of the approach, before the long run back to Hanoi. Surfaces are a deliberate mix of quiet tarmac and dirt, and the guides dial the off-road content up or down to suit the riders in front of them.

Twelve days and roughly 1,965 kilometres from Hanoi down to the beach at Nha Trang, following the parts of the Ho Chi Minh Trail that are worth riding rather than the whole length of it. Vietnam Motorbike Tour Expert starts in the Mai Chau valley, picks up the trail proper at Tan Ky, where the supply route to the south began, and then takes the western branch through Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a two-hundred-kilometre stretch the operator describes as almost empty of traffic. History is not incidental here: the route passes the Khe Sanh marine base and museum, the Vinh Moc tunnels and the Hien Luong bridge that once marked the border between north and south. Two full days off the long stages, in Hue and Hoi An, break the tour in half, and the last three days drop through the Central Highlands to Lak Lake and out to the coast.

Wheels of Morocco rate the route as 100 per cent good tarmac, but the roads are narrow and twisty enough that they ask for experienced riders. Stops along the way include Sidi Kaouki, an argan oil cooperative and the UNESCO-listed medina at Essaouira, with an optional hike into Paradise Valley for anyone with energy left. Days are moderate rather than epic, with the second leg running only about 150 kilometres, which leaves time for a lunch stop in a Chinese settlement on the Burmese border, a long-tail boat ride to Karen villages and an afternoon spent on the Salween River. Riders need real time on large-capacity machines and should be able to hold an average of 80 to 120 kph. The published price of 38,000 baht per rider covers the bike, fuel, gear, three nights of private accommodation and two meals a day; pillion passengers are quoted separately at 13,000 baht.
