5 Days Motorcycle Tour from Merzouga to Zagora
Merzouga, Morocco
Overview
The five-day version is the operator's mid-length trip and the one that covers the most ground: a genuine loop rather than a series of day rides from a fixed base, running southwest from Merzouga as far as Zagora before turning back through Alnif. Daily stages generally sit between 150 and 250 kilometres, which on a 450 enduro over mixed sand, rock and track is a full day's work. It opens the same way the shorter tour does, crossing the Erg Chebbi dunes with a stop in Khamlia for Gnawa music, then out through Begaa and the Tisrdmine oasis to a picnic at Safsaf and a hotel night in Erfoud. Day two is the mountain day, threading the scenic off-road trails of the Jbal Mdawar and visiting Aferdou, the mountain whose profile invites the tajine comparison, before descending to the Bourika oasis and a desert camp or guesthouse at M'harech. Day three is the rally day: the route follows the old Paris-Dakar line across plains and rocky roads through Maader and Oumjran, with tea shared with Berber nomads along the way, ending in Zagora. Day four turns north up the Draa valley through the palm groves to Nkob, a town with more than forty-five traditional kasbahs, then over mountain passes to Alnif. The last day runs through Rissani, its souks and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, back to Merzouga. Everything material is included: the KTM 450, four nights across hotels and desert camps, an experienced guide, all meals, fuel, an assistance vehicle with a mechanic, motorcycle insurance, bottled water and safety equipment including helmets and gloves. Personal travel insurance, flights, drinks and private expenses are excluded. This is not a beginner's tour. A valid motorcycle licence and previous riding experience are required, the minimum age is 18, the group minimum is two, and the terrain across five days includes soft sand, rock and long open plains. Spring and autumn are the operator's recommended seasons for the region.
Five days on KTM 450 enduros running a loop from Merzouga out to Zagora and back, with daily stages generally between 150 and 250 kilometres. The route crosses the Erg Chebbi dunes, works through the Jbal Mdawar mountains and past Aferdou, whose shape gets it compared to a tajine, follows a stretch of the old Paris-Dakar rally route across the plains at Maader and Oumjran, and drops into the Draa valley for Nkob and its forty-five kasbahs before returning through Alnif and Rissani. Nights alternate between hotels and desert camps. Two riders minimum, 18 and over, full motorcycle licence and prior experience required. Bike, fuel, insurance, safety equipment, all meals and a support vehicle with a mechanic are all included.
