On the Trail of Chinggis Khan, 12 Days
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Overview
A 1,370 km off-road expedition across Mongolia: steppe, the Orkhon Valley, remote river crossings and wilderness camps.
A 1,370 km loop across Mongolia, almost entirely off road, camping most nights under the stars. From Ulaanbaatar the route heads west into the steppe to Khugnu Khaan, through nomadic grazing country to the 13th century Mongol capital at Karakorum, into the Orkhon Valley for a hike to the cliff-perched Tuvkhun Monastery, past the Orkhon Waterfall and onto trackless plains for a remote three-river crossing. Then thermal hot springs at Tsenkher, a canyon-edge camp on the Chuluut River, the volcanic shores of the Great White Lake, a high mountain saddle camp over the Northern Pass, and Bronze Age deer stones on the descent to Murun, with an internal flight back to the capital. Rated difficult and physically demanding: this is the operator's most strenuous tour, on Voge 300 Rally and CF Moto 450MT machines suited to rivers and mud. From USD 5,250 per rider.
