Ha Giang Loop Motorbike Tour from Hanoi – 5 Days

This is the version of the Ha Giang Loop that treats the ride north as part of the tour instead of a transfer to be skipped. Riders are collected from their Hanoi hotel at 8am, taken to the operator's shop for a briefing and gear fitting, and on the bikes by around nine. The first day runs 180 kilometres up a winding road beside the Red River through rice paddies and farmland, with lunch in Doan Hung, easy dirt sections through tea and rice fields in Yen Bai province, and a finish at Vu Linh on Thac Ba Lake. Thac Ba is a man-made lake with more than three thousand islands, and the day ends with a boat ride on it and dinner with a local family in a homestay. Day two is a shorter, deliberately early finish in Ha Giang city, partly so the guide can collect the permits needed for the frontier zone ahead. Day three is the reason people book: 170 kilometres of narrow mountain road across the Dong Van karst plateau, over the Ma Pi Leng and Heaven Gate passes, through H'Mong villages built into bare rock, ending in Meo Vac. Day four heads for Ba Be, the largest natural lake in Vietnam, on back roads and river crossings, with the bikes loaded onto a boat for a stretch of the Pe Leng river and a Tay village homestay at the far end. The last day covers 240 kilometres back to Hanoi, off the main road for as long as the guides can manage it, finishing at the shop around 3.30pm with a van transfer to your hotel. The operator rates this as a chill-level tour but is honest that the riding includes hard off-road and single track, and that the balance can be shifted in either direction. Bikes are Honda XR150L, CRF250L or CRF300L. The price covers an English-speaking guide who is also a mechanic, fuel, protective gear, every meal, all accommodation, permits, entrance fees and the boat trips. A support vehicle, airport transfers and flights are extra. Riders need their home motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention; a car licence will not do.
