The Mekong River Tour

Motorbike Madness grades this seven day, 2,135 kilometre route advanced, and the daily legs explain why: several days run close to 400 kilometres. From Pattaya the tour opens with a short local loop and briefing, then heads north through Khao Yai National Park to Nakhon Ratchasima. Day three climbs to the cliff top temple of Phrathat Pha Sorn Kaew on the way to Thung Salaeng, and day four is the highlight: a technical hill climb to Phu Tubberk at 1,768 metres, the twenty metre wide narrowest point between Thailand and Laos, and the Mekong River Skywalk, a glass floored platform eighty metres above the water, before an overnight in the teakwood town of Chiang Khan. The return runs through Khon Kaen and Nang Rong back to Pattaya.

Two days and one night take this Motorbike Madness route from Pattaya down the gulf coast to Chanthaburi and back. The first morning is spent at the base camp on the safety briefing, gear fitting and the onsite training course, and then the group rides what the operator describes as a hundred kilometres of twisting, winding road through villages, towns and temples to Amphoe Khao Chamao National Park, where jungle waterfalls fill natural swimming pools. Lunch is at a forest restaurant and the night is spent on the beach near Chanthaburi over a dinner of locally caught fish. Day two takes in historic Chanthaburi town and the shrine of King Taksin, then the coastal roads around bays and headlands before turning inland to Silver Lake, the Big Buddha Mountain ring road and some jungle trail.

A Great Day Out

Motorbike Madness built this single day ride as its introduction to the roads around Pattaya, and it is graded beginner friendly. A car collects you from your hotel and brings you to the base camp, and the ride opens with the two temples on Buddha Hill at Pratamnak and their panoramic views over Pattaya and its beach. From there the group leaves the resort behind on quiet country roads past Siam Country Club, Maphachan Lake, fruit plantations, golf courses and cattle ranches on the way to Silver Lake. Big Buddha Mountain follows, with a ring road running the whole way around it and viewpoints over hills, vineyards and water, plus some dirt trail riding in the surrounding area. Lunch is at the beach community of Bang Chang, and the return leg hugs the coast back towards Pattaya.

This is the week long version of the Motorbike Madness island trip, running from the company's Pattaya base down the eastern seaboard to Koh Chang and back. Day one is spent at base camp on the safety briefing, gear fitting and the onsite training course, and the riding starts the following morning with rural villages and the waterfalls of Khao Chamao National Park on the way to a beachside night at Chanthaburi. From Trat the group takes a forty to fifty minute ferry across to Koh Chang, where two days go to the island: Kae Bae Beach and a cliffside restaurant, then the Khlong Phlu and Klong Nonsi waterfalls and the mountain interior, followed by a free beach day. The return runs the coast road back to Chanthaburi and finishes over Silver Lake and Big Buddha Mountain.

Isan is the part of Thailand most visitors never see, and Motorbike Madness reaches it from Pattaya in six riding days of between 244 and 348 kilometres. The route opens with backroads past lakes and a stretch of dirt through rubber plantations to Nakhon Ratchasima, then heads north to Khon Kaen by way of the Khmer sanctuary at Phimai and the Chi river. The third day is the big one, looping through Sakon Nakhon to cross the two kilometre Thepsuda bridge and finish at the pink lotus lake near Udon Thani. Chaiyaphum follows, with the curves around the Ubolratana reservoir and the sandstone pillars of Mor Hin Khao, then Pak Chong on the edge of Khao Yai, and finally the tight park roads and limestone country back to Pattaya.

Kanchanaburi is the first base, with a day given to the Death Railway mountain pass, the Bridge over the River Kwai and the war museum, and another to Erawan National Park, reached by a fifty kilometre road the operator rates among the best anywhere. The hardest day is Pilok, a former tin and tungsten mining settlement hidden in the mountains where the tarmac simply ends and steep rock and loose dirt take over, with a village homestay at the top. Sangkhlaburi follows with Thailand's largest wooden bridge and a boat to a sunken temple, then Phu Toei National Park, the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya, and the run home past Silver Lake.

Fifteen days and 2,700 kilometres take this Motorbike Madness tour from Pattaya to the far northwest and back, and despite its name the published itinerary is built around the Mae Hong Son Loop rather than the Golden Triangle confluence. The route runs north through Nakhon Sawan and the Bhumibol Dam to Chiang Mai, then spends the middle of the trip in the mountains: Doi Inthanon by vehicle, the legendary Chiang Mai to Pai road, the Karen villages and Pai Canyon, the caves and high viewpoints above Mae Hong Son, the Shan communities near the Myanmar border, and Mae Sariang. Riders receive a Mae Hong Son Loop completion certificate on the way south to Kamphaeng Phet, and the trip ends with the Sukhothai ruins, two days in Khao Yai including a dedicated off road day, and the run home.

The opening leg crosses Bangkok using the Saming Phray pier ferry over the Chao Phraya and runs down to Hua Hin, then continues past Rajabhakti Park and the rock formations of Khao Sam Roi Yot to Chumphon. Day three crosses to the Andaman side and Khao Sok National Park, whose rainforest the operator describes as older than the Amazon, before Phuket and a rest day. Ao Nang in Krabi follows with a second rest day among the limestone cliffs, then a long leg through Khao Pu-Khao Ya National Park to Hat Yai. The return is the unusual part: a short ride to Songkhla and an overnight Seahorse ferry across the Gulf of Thailand to Sattahip.
