The rules in India
- International Driving Permit
- India is party to the 1949 convention. GOV.UK says you need the 1949 IDP and your licence, and that how long you can ride on a foreign licence varies from state to state. A 2026 Punjab and Haryana High Court judgment confirmed that a foreign licence is not automatically valid in India.
- Motorcycle category
- Your licence and IDP must cover motorcycles.
- Helmets
- Compulsory for everyone over four years old riding or carried on a motorcycle (Motor Vehicles Act, section 129). Sikhs wearing a turban are exempt.
- Enforcement
- In the 2026 High Court case, the insurer was allowed to pay the victim and then recover the money from the driver and owner, because the driver had no licence valid in India.
- Insurance
- Travel insurers commonly refuse claims if you crash without a valid licence for the bike you were riding. New Zealand's government warns that without a motorcycle licence your travel insurance may be void. Read your policy before you ride.

No motorcycle licence?
An IDP never adds a motorcycle category, so without one you can't legally ride in India. You can ride pillion behind a licensed local rider, or join a guided tour where a staff rider carries you, if the operator offers that. A guided tour does not make it legal to ride yourself without a licence.
Questions riders ask
- Which IDP do I need to ride in India?
- The 1949 version, according to GOV.UK, carried with your home licence.
- How long can I ride in India on a foreign licence?
- GOV.UK says it varies from state to state. Ask the transport office in the state you're riding in.
