The rules in Namibia
- International Driving Permit
- Road Traffic and Transport Regulations 2001, regulation 121: a foreign licence counts if it is in English (or comes with a certificate or sworn English translation) and has your photo and signature, and an international driving permit counts for its period of validity.
- Licence on its own
- Regulation 121 accepts a foreign licence that is issued in English and carries your photo and signature, for as long as it is valid at home. If your licence is not in English, carry an IDP or a certified English translation.
- Motorcycle category
- Namibian rules work by vehicle class, so your licence must cover motorcycles.
- Helmets
- Compulsory for rider and passenger, properly fitted with the chin strap fastened (regulation 226).
- Insurance
- Travel insurers commonly refuse claims if you crash without a valid licence for the bike you were riding. New Zealand's government warns that without a motorcycle licence your travel insurance may be void. Read your policy before you ride.
What you need, by where your licence is from
Assumes your licence includes the motorcycle category. Without it, no IDP makes riding legal.

No motorcycle licence?
An IDP never adds a motorcycle category, so without one you can't legally ride in Namibia. You can ride pillion behind a licensed local rider, or join a guided tour where a staff rider carries you, if the operator offers that. A guided tour does not make it legal to ride yourself without a licence.
Questions riders ask
- Do I need an IDP to ride in Namibia?
- Not if your licence is in English with your photo and signature. Otherwise carry an IDP or a certified English translation of your licence.
