Highlander 1: Uyuni, Potosí and Sucre, 13 Days

The gentlest way into Bolivia's high country. Daily distances stay short so that altitude is something you acclimatise to rather than fight, and the dirt is limited to well-maintained gravel. The centrepiece is a full day riding out across the Salar de Uyuni to Inca Huasi island, ninety per cent of it on salt.

Thirteen days across the Bolivian Andes on Suzuki DR650SE, from Samaipata to the Salar de Uyuni by way of the Che Guevara trail, colonial Sucre and the silver mines of Potosí. Fifteen per cent dirt, mostly well-kept gravel, with short riding days and a high point of 4,486 metres.
