Negombo, Sri Lanka
Ride On Sri Lanka built this loop around roads rather than sights. After a first riding day from Negombo to Kitulgala to get used to the bike and left-hand traffic, it follows narrow estate roads past Ratnapura to the southern edge of the Sinharaja Rainforest, descends Wangu 10, skirts Udawalawe National Park and climbs through Kalthota to Belihuloya. The highland days take in the Mini Devil's Staircase at Hildashinna, Pilkington Point, Ravana Falls and Ella, then the 18 Bends, the southern edge of the Knuckles range and the Victoria Reservoir, before the climb through Galaha and Kandapola to Nuwara Eliya. The last night is at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. The operator describes it as more demanding than their classic touring itineraries but not an enduro or off-road expedition: expect narrow roads, steep gradients, tight bends and some imperfect surfaces, with stages of 100 to 200 km that can take four to six hours. Riders need a home motorcycle licence and/or an International Driving Permit; Ride On arranges the local endorsement from the Automobile Association of Ceylon. July brings green hills and changeable mountain weather, including mist and rain. The tour runs for a maximum of 10 riders and can also be arranged on request for groups of four or more. Bring your own helmet and riding gear.
Ten days and about 1,180 km on Sri Lanka's mountain backroads, from Negombo through Kitulgala, the Sinharaja Rainforest, Ella, the 18 Bends and Nuwara Eliya to Colombo. Roughly 60% of the riding is on even surfaces and 40% on uneven ones, for experienced riders, with a Honda CRF 250 Rally, fuel, all meals and a support vehicle included.
