Desert and Atlas Motorcycle TourDesert

Desert and Atlas Motorcycle Tour

Morocco, Morocco

9 days

Nine days based out of Marrakesh, seven of them in the saddle, on a loop that trades the High Atlas for the Middle Atlas cedar belt before dropping to the edge of the Sahara. Riding days run roughly 125 to 280 km and are almost entirely sealed, with only a token stretch of optional gravel. The route takes in the lake at Bin El Ouidane and the Ouzoud falls, the forests around Azrou and their Barbary apes, the old Foreign Legion tunnel on the run down to Errachidia, and the dunes at Merzouga, where the night is spent in a desert camp. Homeward legs link the Todra and Dades valleys, the kasbah at Ait Benhaddou and the 2,260 m Tichka pass. Wheels of Morocco run it with a guide on a bike, hotel accommodation, a luggage vehicle once five riders sign on, and a fleet spanning KTM 390 to BMW GS.

The Nan Loop - motorcycle tour in ThailandScenic

The Nan Loop

Chiang Mai, Thailand

8 days

Tour C in the operator's range and the one it sells to sport riders: wide sweeping bends, very little traffic and, in its own words, knee sliders optional. The loop runs Chiang Mai to Phayao, on to Nan for two nights with a 491-kilometre day trip out from there, then Uttaradit and a fast return to Chiang Mai. There are a few sights along the way, ancient temple murals and a weaving village among them, but the operator is honest that the appeal is the roads themselves and how far they sit from anywhere tourists normally go. The bike list skews accordingly toward the Kawasaki Versys 650, Honda CB650R, Suzuki V-Strom 650 and 1050 and the Ducati Monster. Published price is 64,189 baht per person, all-inclusive of meals, fuel, rooms, entrance fees and transfers.

The northern half is the wilder one: Nan by way of the world's largest teak tree and a river ferry, Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle, the newly paved sweepers into Thaton, and Pai. Thailand Moto Tours runs its own version of the Mae Hong Son Loop, a week of sealed mountain road out of Chiang Mai that the company counts at over 2,000 curves. Ride in Asia publishes the guided price at 82,200 baht per rider, with a self-guided version at 50,100 and pillion seats at 10,700. Several national parks along the way charge their own entrance fees, which are not included.
