The Unknown Thailand, 10 Days
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Overview
A loop through the parts of northern Thailand that most tours skip. After an easy first day past the White Temple to Chiang Khong on the Mekong, the route climbs to Phu Chi Fa on the Laos border, visits a border market at Huai Kon and the old salt wells of Bo Kluea, and reaches Nan. From Na Noi and Sri Nan National Park it crosses the Sirikit Reservoir by ferry to Sukhothai's temples, then follows the Myanmar border from Mae Sot along the Nam Yuam river to Mae Sariang and back to Chiang Mai. Daily stages run between about 240 and 290 km. Thaiger Motorbike Tours is a small Thai-German family business: a local Thai guide leads, and the owners come along on every trip.
Ten days and about 2,100 km of quiet back roads from Chiang Mai: the Mekong at Chiang Khong, Phu Chi Fa, Nan, Sukhothai and the Myanmar border at Mae Sot. Rental bike, fuel, breakfasts, lunches and airport transfers are included, for groups of two to eight riders.
