Bali Treasures - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaAdventure

Bali Treasures

Ubud, Indonesia

5 days

Five days and 436 km around Bali, starting in Ubud and finishing in Canggu. The route runs from the island's cultural centre out to the east coast at Amed, up over the Kintamani crater rim above Mount Batur, across to Tejakula on the north shore, then inland through Munduk and down through the Jatiluwih rice terraces. Days are short by touring standards, between 27 and 147 km, working out at roughly four to five hours in the saddle at an average of about 50 km/h. Most of it is sealed road with some light off-road, and there are sharp bends and steep climbs and descents throughout. Off the bike there is snorkelling on the reef at Amed, volcanic hot springs, a sunrise boat trip to look for dolphins, a walk to a waterfall and a barbecue on a black sand beach. Intrepid Moto rates it Intermediate +, so you should be confident with throttle and clutch control, steep gradients and light unsurfaced surfaces. It suits riders who want culture and stops built into the days rather than a pure distance run. Minimum four riders.

Smoking Volcanoes: Bali to Bromo - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaAdventure

Smoking Volcanoes: Bali to Bromo

Canggu, Indonesia

8 days

An eight-day, 950 km ride from Bali into East Java and back, built around two volcanoes: Bromo and Kawah Ijen. It starts on the coast at Canggu and heads north through Tabanan's farmland and up the hillside roads below Mount Batukaru, then on to the far northwest tip of Bali. Day three crosses the Bali Strait by ferry from Gilimanuk, after which the route runs through East Java's rice fields, villages and forested hills to Ambulu, then climbs into the Bromo-Tengger highlands. One full day is given over to riding down into the Tengger caldera and across the ash plains of the Sea of Sands, with an optional climb to the crater rim. The final day starts at 3 a.m. for the climb to Kawah Ijen, whose crater holds one of the world's largest highly acidic lakes, timed to reach the rim at sunrise. Expect five to six hours of riding a day, a top elevation of 2,400 m, two ferry crossings and a mix of tarmac, rough stone tracks and volcanic sand. Rated Intermediate +, minimum four riders.

Dragon Rider - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaAdventure

Dragon Rider

Sekotong, Indonesia

10 days

A ten-day, 1,640 km ride east across Lombok and Sumbawa, ending with two nights at sea in the Komodo Islands. The route crosses the Wallace Line and works through jungle, dry savannah and coastal roads, with two ferry crossings and daily legs that reach 269 and 279 km. Day two includes a private track session on the Mandalika MotoGP circuit. At Labuan Jambu there is an early boat trip to swim with whale sharks, and from Sape the group leaves the bikes to board a private charter phinisi, sailing to Komodo National Park to see the dragons on foot, then on to the Taka Makasar sandbar, Pink Beach, Manta Point and Gili Lawa. The bikes are picked up again on the mainland for the run back west along the north coast of Sumbawa, over to Lombok by ferry, up into the mountains at Sembalun and down to the coast at Senggigi. Riding is fully on-road, five to seven hours a day at around 60 km/h. Rated Intermediate +, minimum six riders.

Lombok & West Sumbawa: 6 Day Inter-island Explorer - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaAdventure

Lombok & West Sumbawa: 6 Day Inter-island Explorer

Senggigi, Indonesia

6 days

A six-day, 950 km loop out of Senggigi on Lombok, crossing by ferry to West Sumbawa and back. It is the shorter version of Intrepid Moto's inter-island route, and it keeps the highlights: a private track session on the Mandalika MotoGP circuit, mountain ridgelines with long views, coastal roads through quiet country, and an early morning swim with whale sharks at Labuan Jambu. Two of the days are long, at 268 and 250 km, and the ferry crossing to Sumbawa takes about two hours each way. Riding is fully on-road at an average of around 60 km/h, working out at five to six hours a day. Intrepid Moto rates this one Intermediate rather than Intermediate +, so the requirement is average riding experience, comfort with throttle and clutch control, moderate inclines and sharp curves, and some basic experience of unsurfaced roads. It suits riders who want the Lombok and Sumbawa route but only have a week. Minimum four riders, and lodging is on a shared room basis.

7 Day Enduro Tour - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaOff-Road

7 Day Enduro Tour

Canggu, Indonesia

7 days

A week of riding that crosses most of Bali, from the sand on the west coast to the volcanic ground around Mount Batur. Day one starts at the BDB garage with a route briefing and gear fitting, then runs the beach from Yeh Gangga to Medewi, set off about an hour before low tide, with roughly 95 percent of that section on soft sand. The rest of the week moves inland to the Negara rubber forest for fast single track, river crossings and hill climbs, north through village lanes and rice farms to Lovina, then up to Kintamani for the black lava fields and the jungle inside the Batur caldera. Trails are rated from 3 to 8 stars and the guides adapt them to the group, so first timers and experienced riders can ride the same week. A support vehicle carries luggage and gear, hotels and meals are arranged, and day four in Lovina is a full rest day. The tour runs once a month, at the end of the month.

4 Days Kintamani Enduro Tour - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaOff-Road

4 Days Kintamani Enduro Tour

Kintamani, Indonesia

4 days

Four days based in Kintamani, in the volcanic highlands around Mount Batur, with three nights at Pramana Zahill and transfers from the airport or your previous hotel. The riding splits between the dense Kintamani Forest, with steep downhill jungle, sandy riverbeds and wide open tracks, and the volcanic side of the area: black sand dunes, ash, lava rock and the open ground inside the caldera. The first ride goes out on arrival day once you have had a chance to rest, then day two and day three are full days across the Mount Batur landscape, with a last ride on day four before your onward transfer. The area sits between roughly 1,000 and 2,500 metres, so temperatures stay more comfortable than on the coast. Terrain can be adapted between beginner and advanced, and the guides set the pace to the group. Bikes, fuel, fresh gear each day, meals and drinks are all part of the package.

Days two and three cover the wider Tabanan area on enduro bikes: natural obstacles between rice fields and rainforest, jungle track with logs, rocks and river crossings, sections overlooking the UNESCO listed Jatiluwih rice terraces, and more beach riding. Day four is a final breakfast at the hotel and, depending on your departure time, a half day jungle ride before the drop off. Volcano Kintamani Trail (Mount Batur Day Ride) - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaOff-Road

Volcano Kintamani Trail (Mount Batur Day Ride)

Kintamani, Indonesia

1 day

The Volcano Kintamani trail runs across the black sand and lava fields around Mount Batur, which is the ground most people picture when they think of dirt biking in Bali. Riding is 50 to 60 km depending on the package, between roughly 389 and 1,245 metres of elevation, with about 660 metres of climbing and a similar amount of descent. The surface is mostly deep volcanic sand and lava rock with open dune sections you can jump and long sightlines across the caldera. The trail is graded beginner to advanced and the guides adapt it to your level, so it works as a first time on a dirt bike as well as a day out for someone who already rides. The half day option runs in the morning and takes around four hours around the Mount Batur landscape. The full day is around eight hours and adds the deep forest and sandy riverbeds of the Forest Kintamani trail. Everything starts and finishes at LakeView Bali.

Beach Tabanan Trail (Coastal Day Ride) - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaOff-Road

Beach Tabanan Trail (Coastal Day Ride)

Tabanan, Indonesia

1 day

A day on the sand along the Tabanan coastline, 40 to 50 km of flat beach riding with the Indian Ocean on one side and local fishing villages on the other. There is no climbing or descent on this trail, which is what makes it the easiest of the four to pick up, and riders who already know what they are doing can use the open sand for controlled drifting at speed. The route crosses several rivers where they meet the beach. Because it is tide dependent the exact line changes from day to day and the guides set the start time around low tide. Half day runs about four hours, either in the morning or in the afternoon so the ride finishes at sunset, and the full day is around eight hours along the coast. It is graded beginner to advanced, so it suits people who have never sat on a dirt bike as well as experienced riders. Everything starts and ends at the Bali Dirt Bikes Basecamp in Pangkung Tibah.

Jungle Tabanan Trail (Full Day Enduro Ride) - motorcycle tour in IndonesiaOff-Road

Jungle Tabanan Trail (Full Day Enduro Ride)

Tabanan, Indonesia

1 day

The hardest of the Tabanan day rides and the one aimed at people who already ride. The trail runs 40 to 55 km through rice fields and rainforest between about 56 and 591 metres of elevation, with roughly 1,460 metres of climbing and 1,740 metres of descent packed into the day. Obstacles are natural rather than built: dense vegetation, logs, rocks and river crossings, with sections that look out over Jatiluwih, the UNESCO listed rice terrace area. Parts of the route pass through areas that are usually off limits, and the guides use the stops to talk through local customs and food. In the wet season the ground turns slippery and muddy, which makes it a serious day even for advanced riders. The full day is around eight hours and finishes with a sunset ride on Tabanan Beach. A shorter four hour morning option covers the jungle only. Both start and end at the Bali Dirt Bikes Basecamp.
