Lombok & West Sumbawa: 6 Day Inter-island Explorer

A six-day, 950 km loop out of Senggigi on Lombok, crossing by ferry to West Sumbawa and back. It is the shorter version of Intrepid Moto's inter-island route, and it keeps the highlights: a private track session on the Mandalika MotoGP circuit, mountain ridgelines with long views, coastal roads through quiet country, and an early morning swim with whale sharks at Labuan Jambu. Two of the days are long, at 268 and 250 km, and the ferry crossing to Sumbawa takes about two hours each way. Riding is fully on-road at an average of around 60 km/h, working out at five to six hours a day. Intrepid Moto rates this one Intermediate rather than Intermediate +, so the requirement is average riding experience, comfort with throttle and clutch control, moderate inclines and sharp curves, and some basic experience of unsurfaced roads. It suits riders who want the Lombok and Sumbawa route but only have a week. Minimum four riders, and lodging is on a shared room basis.

A ten-day, 1,640 km ride east across Lombok and Sumbawa, ending with two nights at sea in the Komodo Islands. The route crosses the Wallace Line and works through jungle, dry savannah and coastal roads, with two ferry crossings and daily legs that reach 269 and 279 km. Day two includes a private track session on the Mandalika MotoGP circuit. At Labuan Jambu there is an early boat trip to swim with whale sharks, and from Sape the group leaves the bikes to board a private charter phinisi, sailing to Komodo National Park to see the dragons on foot, then on to the Taka Makasar sandbar, Pink Beach, Manta Point and Gili Lawa. The bikes are picked up again on the mainland for the run back west along the north coast of Sumbawa, over to Lombok by ferry, up into the mountains at Sembalun and down to the coast at Senggigi. Riding is fully on-road, five to seven hours a day at around 60 km/h. Rated Intermediate +, minimum six riders.

Five days and 436 km around Bali, starting in Ubud and finishing in Canggu. The route runs from the island's cultural centre out to the east coast at Amed, up over the Kintamani crater rim above Mount Batur, across to Tejakula on the north shore, then inland through Munduk and down through the Jatiluwih rice terraces. Days are short by touring standards, between 27 and 147 km, working out at roughly four to five hours in the saddle at an average of about 50 km/h. Most of it is sealed road with some light off-road, and there are sharp bends and steep climbs and descents throughout. Off the bike there is snorkelling on the reef at Amed, volcanic hot springs, a sunrise boat trip to look for dolphins, a walk to a waterfall and a barbecue on a black sand beach. Intrepid Moto rates it Intermediate +, so you should be confident with throttle and clutch control, steep gradients and light unsurfaced surfaces. It suits riders who want culture and stops built into the days rather than a pure distance run. Minimum four riders.

Desert, Lake & Mountain – One Day Ride from Marrakech

Two hundred kilometres in a day, split roughly sixty per cent road and forty per cent off-road, and arranged so that a rider passing through Marrakech can get a genuine taste of the Atlas foothills without committing a week to it. The published run of stops is Marrakech, the Agafay stone desert, Lac Lalla Takerkoust, Ouirgane and Asni, which is desert, lake and mountain in one loop and gives the tour its name. GSLine rates it intermediate, restricts it to experienced riders with a licence held two years or more, and asks for a medical report before departure. Groups run from one to ten riders, and the bike list is the same as on the multi-day circuits, from the BMW G 310 GS at the headline rate up to the R 1300 GS. Fuel and lunch are the only significant exclusions, and a photo and video shoot is included in the price.

Five days and four nights with three of them spent on the bike, working the country east of Marrakech, an area Atlas Enduro describes as little explored and which shifts between wide desert plain and rough mountain. This is the operator's entry-level multi-day raid: enough riding to feel like a real trip, short enough that the arrival and departure days absorb the flights. The route sticks to little-travelled roads and passes through traditional Berber villages, and the emphasis is squarely on off-road riding rather than sightseeing from the saddle. Departures need a minimum of four riders. Six days and five nights with four of them on the bike, aimed at the Erg Chegaga dunes and run at what Atlas Enduro itself calls a fast but intense pace. Chegaga is the biggest sand sea in Morocco and considerably harder to reach than the dunes near Merzouga, which is the point of the trip: the express framing means the route gets there and back inside a working week rather than easing into it. Expect majestic dune riding, nights under a great deal of sky and encounters with the nomadic families who live out there. Departures need at least four riders. Atlas Enduro's longest published circuit: eight days, seven nights and six of them on the bike, running from the company's southern base into what it describes as the most deserted parts of southern Morocco. The operator frames it as a real introduction to motorbike raids without the stress of a time trial, which is a fair description of the difference between this and a competitive rally. Six consecutive riding days in empty country is a serious week, and the assistance vehicle carrying luggage and tools is what makes it workable. Departures need at least four riders. Six nights and five days of riding through the High Atlas on 125cc Cimatti Scramblers and Bobbers, which is the detail that makes Desert Rats different from every other operator on this list. Around thirty per cent of the route is off-road and seventy per cent winding asphalt chosen for its lack of traffic. The company positions this as its hot-weather tour, because the passes reach 2,700 metres and the mountains stay bearable when the desert does not. Highlights it publishes include forests most riders do not expect to find in Morocco, river crossings, a hike to the 110-metre Ouzoud Falls with its Barbary apes, isolated Berber villages and lunch with a local family. Groups are capped at twelve riders plus a guide, and the Bobber can be ridden on a car licence.

Six nights and five days of riding, starting in the green valley of Agdz and working out across the dry lake bed of Lac Iriki to the dunes of Erg Chegaga, on the same 125cc Cimatti Scramblers and Bobbers the company uses everywhere. The split is roughly sixty per cent winding asphalt to forty per cent off-road. A night in a traditional Moroccan desert camp and a sundowner on the highest dune of Erg Chegaga are both on the published highlight list, along with the Tamagroute pottery cooperative and its green henna glaze. Six nights and five days of riding, timed by the company for spring and autumn. The published highlights run from lunar rock formations and bare dry mountains to the green palmeraies of the Draa and Dades valleys, the Dades hairpins and gorge, the Monkey Fingers rock formation, a 2,300-metre pass with the Sahara visible in the distance, a stretch the company calls Monument Valley, and the isolated villages of the Ait Atta Berber tribe. Lunch with a Berber family and a palmerie walk with a local guide are both included. Twelve rider places per departure, and every accommodation on this particular route has a swimming pool.

Five days on KTM 450 enduros running a loop from Merzouga out to Zagora and back, with daily stages generally between 150 and 250 kilometres. The route crosses the Erg Chebbi dunes, works through the Jbal Mdawar mountains and past Aferdou, whose shape gets it compared to a tajine, follows a stretch of the old Paris-Dakar rally route across the plains at Maader and Oumjran, and drops into the Draa valley for Nkob and its forty-five kasbahs before returning through Alnif and Rissani. Nights alternate between hotels and desert camps. Two riders minimum, 18 and over, full motorcycle licence and prior experience required. A week on KTM 450 enduros looping out of Ouarzazate, and the operator's most rounded itinerary: it opens with the film studios, Kasbah Taourirt and the UNESCO-listed ksar at Ait Benhaddou before any serious riding begins. From there the route works through the Skoura oases, Mount M'Goun, the Rose Valley, the Dades canyon and the Todra gorge, then out to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes, into the deep desert at Ouzina and M'harech near the Algerian frontier, past dinosaur fossils and copper mines to Zagora, and back up the Draa valley through the Anti-Atlas to close the loop. The operator rates it for intermediate to advanced riders and lists the surfaces plainly as paved road, gravel, sand and off-road. Minimum two riders, 18 and over.
