Ha Giang Loop: easy rider, self-drive or guided tour?
There are three ways to do the Ha Giang Loop. You can ride it yourself on a rented bike, ride your own bike in a guided group, or sit on the back of a bike ridden by a local driver, the "easy rider". The scenery is the same either way. What differs is the licence you need, how much attention the road takes from you, and the price.
This guide compares the three honestly, with prices from the Ha Giang tours listed on Moto Mass, so you can pick the one that fits you.
The three options side by side
| Self-drive | Guided, you ride | Easy rider | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who rides the bike | You, alone or with friends | You, with a guide leading the group | A local driver; you sit behind |
| Licence you need | A licence covering motorcycles plus a valid IDP | The same | None for you, as a passenger |
| Navigation, fuel, homestays | You sort them out | Arranged | Arranged |
| Price for 3 to 4 days (our listings) | Bike hire plus your own costs | About $140 to $200 | About $160 to $260 |
| Suits | Confident riders with the right paperwork | Licensed riders who want company and help | Non-riders, nervous riders, anyone without the paperwork |
The guided and easy rider prices are the published "from" prices of the Ha Giang tours we list, converted to US dollars, and usually include the bike, fuel, guide, homestays and most meals. Check what each one includes. For prices across Vietnam, see our tour price index.
The licence decides most of it
To ride legally in Vietnam you need a licence that covers motorcycles and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, which is what the US and Australia issue, are not valid there. If your licence has no motorcycle category, an IDP cannot add one. Our Vietnam licence checker tells you where you stand by home country.
This matters more on the loop than in most of Vietnam. In April 2026 police in the province stepped up checks on the loop, with particular attention to tour drivers and foreign visitors on rented bikes, and most local rental and travel businesses signed a commitment not to rent bikes to unqualified riders. Riding without a valid licence also usually means your travel insurance won't pay if you crash.
Riding it yourself
The loop is about 313 km over four days on our free route, with around 7,500 metres of climbing. The roads are mostly paved but narrow, broken in places, and shared with trucks, buses and tour convoys. Fog and rain make the passes slippery, and landslides are common in the wet season. Most bikes for hire are small semi-automatics and manuals, which suit the roads well.
Self-drive gives you the most freedom: you stop where you like, stay where you like and set your own pace. It also asks the most of you, so it suits riders who are comfortable on mountain roads and in mixed traffic. Our route page has the whole loop and each day as a free GPX, with fuel stations along the way.
A guided group where you ride
A guide leads, a backup vehicle or mechanic is usually on call, and homestays and meals are booked. You still need the licence and IDP. It is a good middle ground for licensed riders who don't want to navigate, or who are travelling alone and want company. Ask how big the groups are and how the pace is set.
Riding with an easy rider
An easy rider is a local driver who rides the bike while you sit on the back. Many have ridden the loop hundreds of times. You get the views without watching the road, you can take photos on the move, and you need no licence of your own. It is the option most people without a motorcycle licence choose, and plenty of experienced riders choose it too.
The trade-off is that you are a passenger for three or four days, which is tiring in its own way, and you depend on your driver's riding. Ask the company whether its drivers hold licences, what helmets it provides and how large its groups are. Many groups mix the two: some people ride themselves and others go with an easy rider.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do the Ha Giang Loop without a motorcycle licence?
Yes, as a passenger with an easy rider. Riding the bike yourself without a licence that covers motorcycles and a valid IDP is illegal, and checks on the loop were stepped up in 2026.
Is the easy rider option worth the extra cost?
On our listings, easy rider tours cost somewhat more than guided tours where you ride, because you pay for a driver. If you lack the paperwork or don't enjoy riding on narrow mountain roads, most people find it worth it.
How many days do I need?
Four days is the usual split, with nights in Yen Minh, Dong Van and Du Gia. Three days is possible but rushed. Our route page shows each day's distance and climbing.
When is the best time to go?
Spring and autumn are drier and clearer. Winter is cold and often foggy, and summer brings heavy rain. The month-by-month calendar below shows the averages.
