What a Thailand Motorcycle Tour Really Costs
Thailand is the hardest destination to compare on price. Operators quote in different currencies, over wildly different trip lengths, with inclusion lists that run from four lines to twenty. A one-day ride and a ninety-day expedition sit on the same results page.
So do the sum they won't do for you.
Divide by days. Price per riding day is the only number that compares two tours honestly.
Below is that sum, done for every Thailand tour on Moto Mass that publishes a price and a duration, in the currency each operator quotes. These are the listed prices at the time of writing, so confirm with the operator. Everything is browsable on the Thailand motorcycle tours hub.
A note on currency
We don't convert between baht and dollars here. Rates move, and comparing two operators through a rate you looked up last month gives you confident nonsense. Compare within a currency, then convert once, at today's rate, when you have a shortlist.
Baht-priced tours: per riding day
| Tour | Operator | Days | Listed price | Per riding day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A GREAT DAY OUT | Motorbike Madness | 1 | ฿6,900 | ฿6,900 |
| PARADISE ISLAND TOUR | Motorbike Madness | 7 | ฿49,000 | ฿7,000 |
| THE MEKONG RIVER TOUR | Motorbike Madness | 7 | ฿56,000 | ฿8,000 |
| EASTERN SEABOARD TOUR | Motorbike Madness | 2 | ฿17,000 | ฿8,500 |
| THE EASTERN THAILAND ISAN ADVENTURE TOUR | Motorbike Madness | 6 | ฿54,000 | ฿9,000 |
| GOLDEN TRIANGLE GRAND TOUR | Motorbike Madness | 15 | ฿135,000 | ฿9,000 |
| WEST THAILAND KANCHANABURI TOUR | Motorbike Madness | 9 | ฿89,000 | ฿9,889 |
| THE SENSATIONAL SOUTHERN THAILAND TOUR | Motorbike Madness | 10 | ฿120,000 | ฿12,000 |
Across these 8 tours the listed range runs ฿6,900 to ฿135,000, median ฿55,000. Per riding day the band is ฿6,900 to ฿12,000, median ฿8,750, average ฿8,786.
Tighter than the headline prices suggest. A fifteen-day tour and a two-day tour land within a couple of thousand baht per day of each other. The outlier is the ten-day southern itinerary, where island logistics and long transfers do real work on the cost base. The single-day tour sits at the bottom, which is odd: in most markets short trips carry the highest daily rate.
Dollar-priced tours: per riding day
| Tour | Operator | Days | Listed price | Per riding day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Thailand Experience | Ride Adventures | 13 | $5,749 | $442 |
One dollar-priced tour, so there is no range to read into: $442 a riding day for a fully supported thirteen-day trip with a support truck, trailer, bilingual guide, satellite phone, twelve nights of accommodation and almost all meals. Set against the baht table it looks expensive, but it is a different category of trip rather than the same trip at a markup. Convert once, at today's rate, and compare what each price actually includes.
Eight more tours quote on request
Eight Thailand listings on Moto Mass don't publish a price, including the Mae Hong Son Loop tours and the long multi-country expeditions. That's standard where group size, bike choice and border logistics move the number a lot. When you enquire, ask for the price and the number of riding days in the same message, then drop it straight into the tables above.
What the price includes
Inclusion lists in Thailand vary more than in Morocco, and that's where the money hides. Working through our listings:
- Almost always included: the motorcycle, a guide, accommodation on multi-day trips, some meals.
- Frequently excluded: fuel, insurance and personal expenses. Several Thailand listings exclude all three explicitly.
- Only on premium tours: support truck and trailer, luggage transport, panniers, crash protection, permits, airport transfers, entrance fees, tools and tyre repair kits. The 13-day Northern Thailand Experience lists every one of those, which is most of why its per-day figure sits where it does.
The costs outside the tour price
| Line item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Flights | Bangkok is cheapest; Chiang Mai saves a day at each end for northern tours |
| Insurance | Must explicitly cover motorcycling at the engine size you'll ride |
| Security deposit | Held against the bike; can be substantial on large-capacity machines |
| Fuel | Excluded on several listings, so confirm before comparing prices |
| Gear | Bring your own helmet and gloves at minimum; hot-weather kit matters here |
| Meals not covered | Cheap in Thailand, but a two-week gap adds up |
| Domestic transfers | Trains and internal flights if the tour starts away from your arrival city |
Tour versus renting and riding yourself
Thailand is one of the easier countries in Asia to ride independently. Roads are signed in Roman script, fuel and accommodation are everywhere, and rental is straightforward in Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Phuket. A self-organised Mae Hong Son Loop on a rented mid-size bike costs meaningfully less than the guided version.
What you give up is specific, so price it honestly. You lose the local knowledge that finds the good roads rather than the obvious ones, the mechanic who fixes a problem in an hour instead of a day, and a clear insurance position.
Self-guided packages are the middle path and are widely available: a prepared bike, a planned route, booked hotels and a phone number, for less than the guided rate.
Getting better value
- Fly into the region you're riding. Chiang Mai for the north, Phuket or Krabi for the south. Domestic transfers eat days.
- Ride the shoulder season. Late October and early November give near-peak conditions at off-peak availability. See the Thailand riding calendar.
- Start short. A three-day Mae Hong Son tour at ฿24,000 tells you whether you want the eight-day version.
- Right-size the bike. A CB500X-class machine handles every road in this guide. The premium for a 900 or 1250 buys comfort, not capability.
- Ask for the per-day number. Operators quoting on request will give it to you, and it makes their quote directly comparable to the tables above.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Thailand motorcycle tour cost?
On our listings, baht-priced tours run ฿6,900 to ฿135,000, with a median per riding day of ฿8,750. Dollar-priced tours run $210 to $5,749, or $210 to $442 per day, depending entirely on how much support is included.
Why is one tour twice the daily rate of another?
Support. A tour with a truck, trailer, mechanic, luggage transport, permits, entrance fees and almost all meals has a higher cost base than a guided ride where you carry your own bag and buy your own lunch. Compare the inclusion lists side by side before you decide one is overpriced.
Is Thailand cheaper than Vietnam for motorcycle touring?
Generally no, like for like. Vietnamese guided tours start considerably lower: a five-day Ha Giang Loop trip on Moto Mass starts at $140 including bike, guide, fuel, meals and accommodation. Thailand costs more and gives you better infrastructure, better bikes and better roads. See the Vietnam operator guide and the Ha Giang Loop guide.
How much should I budget per day beyond the tour price?
Food and drink outside included meals is cheap, but fuel, entrance fees and the odd hotel upgrade aren't zero. The big variable is fuel. On a long northern itinerary that one line changes the total more than everything else combined.
Do prices change by season?
Availability changes more than price. The November to February window sells out first, especially for large-capacity bikes, and booking three to six months ahead is normal. Wet-season departures are easier to get and sometimes discounted.
Are one-day tours good value?
Yes, and unusually so. In most markets a single day carries a heavy per-day premium. On our Thailand listings the one-day options sit at or below the median daily rate, which makes them a cheap way to test a bike, a road and an operator before you commit a fortnight.
What about riding the Mae Hong Son Loop independently?
Very doable, and the cheapest way to ride it. Rent in Chiang Mai, book three nights, go. Read the Mae Hong Son Loop guide for the route, and the operator guide if you'd rather be led.
